Week 8: Special Topics Summary

    Reese Witherspoon is one of many celebrities that has changed the way the world looks at the book industry. Reese's Book Club is one of four different brands under the production company Witherspoon founded, Hello Sunshine. The other three are The Home Edit, Fair Play, and Unicorn Space (Home, n.d.). The Home Edit is a partnership between two women and focuses on making organization focused and functional (Story, n.d.). Fair Play and Unicorn Space are books written by Eve Rodsky, and focus on the inequality of unpaid, invisible work that is required to maintain a household. Her husband wasn't very responsive to her discovery, so she interviewed over 500 men and women in order to find the solution to this problem. With Fair Play, there are 100 different chores, a hypothetical card game, and a chance for a couple to find time to do the things that bring them joy, which is their Unicorn Space (The book, n.d.). Reese's Book Club highlights diverse women and nonbinary authors for their monthly selection of titles. There is no set selection process for the monthly titles. When a title is selected, Hello Sunshine gains the production rights for the book, so should it ever be made into a show or movie, Hello Sunshine will be able to sell the production rights to different streaming services for them to create the show/movie. Reese's Book Club has even created a mentor/mentee program for diverse, unpublished women and nonbinary authors. Once accepted, authors attend a writers retreat to learn more about the industry and polish their completed manuscripts. They are then paired with a published author for a three month mentorship for them to finalize their books and send them off to be published. The book club also promotes literacy and indie bookstores. (Reese's book club, n.d.)
